RALEIGH, N.C. (December 2, 2024) – The Job-Site Safety Institute (JSI), a nonprofit research and educational organization dedicated to improving safety and protecting lives, has announced it has awarded a new grant to the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) that will allow for the development of an in-person training course focused on fall prevention in residential construction. The grant includes additional funding from the National Housing Endowment (NHE).
“Since our inception, JSI has taken a lead role in understanding the reasons construction workers are injured from falls,” said Bill Schaffner, President of JSI. “We know that partnerships with organizations like NAHB and NHE will continue to lead to the development of training initiatives that will help thousands of workers become aware of hazards and help them remain safe on the job-site.”
Falls are the leading cause of accident and death in the construction industry. The program will be designed to address key fall hazards that employers and workers should focus on to reduce falls from elevations, including falls from building structures, falls associated with stairways and ladders, and falls from scaffolding.
“NAHB emphasizes fostering a culture of safety on the jobsite, and by partnering with JSI and NHE to develop this program, we can create a safer workspace for our industry,” said Brad Mannion, NAHB’s Director of Labor, Safety, & Health. “Proactive fall prevention training directly translates to fewer injuries, lower workers’ compensation claims, and ultimately, a more productive and confident workforce.”
20 in-person fall prevention courses will be delivered to NAHB members at selected state and local homebuilder associations between December 2024 and May 2025.
“This training program fulfills one of the ultimate goals of the National Housing Endowment – to develop a safer and well-trained workforce in residential construction,” said Mark Pursell, President & CEO of the NHE. “Investing in fall prevention training for residential construction workers is a crucial step toward ensuring the safety and well-being of those on the front lines of the industry.”
